Ambulances for Poipet, Cambodia

Priority Project –

Poipet, NW Cambodia

Poipet, CambodiaIn northwest Cambodia, there is only one critical care hospital to serve the entire province. In outlying villages there is no adequate medical care and the only option for medical emergencies is to send patients to this hospital which for many villages, is more than 40 miles away on very rough roads.

CAMA has been working with the Cambodian Ministry of Health to establish ambulance service in strategic remote locations to help emergency patients get to the provincial hospital as soon as possible by pre-positioning ambulances in areas that do not have those services.

CAMA has supplied 3 ambulances in northwest Cambodia in the past four years and is also training both First Responders and Emergency Medical Technicians to serve their emergency needs. As part of the Poipet Community Health Project, CAMA plans to provide 2 more ambulances in 2008 in strategic areas that have no ambulance service.

The cost of each ambulance is $15,000 for the 4 wheel-drive vehicle necessary for Cambodia’s rough roads plus an additional $2,000/vehicle to convert it to an ambulance. So each ambulance costs $17,000 x 2 ambulances making the total need $34,000.
